an unexpected event: i have a job interview next tuesday with a publishing company in blue ash. holy crap. its for an associate editor position. they want me to bring writing samples. time to dig up some old shite.
any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

fucking awesome! congratulations man. I do all the filtering of resumes and interviews in my office and i've got plenty of horror stories. i'd be happy to help if you've got questions or want somebody to look over the samples and/or resume.
absolutely. i feel a bit out of my element to be honest. i do enjoy writing and the like but have no idea what i should bring with me next week. college papers? fiction? nonfiction? the hilariously boring 20 page physical examination form i made for the city of niiza, saitama, japan?
i have no idea.

for this kind of thing i'd imagine college papers or the boring physical examination. something that shows you've got a good grasp of diverse grammatical structure. you probably want two to three different examples, none of them more than five pages in length.
I think you'd also need to take into account what kind of material this publishing company will be expecting you to edit. What do they publish? Do you have an idea of what kinds of materials you'd be reading? Failing any knowledge of that kind, I'd agree with the cowboy. Take some academic stuff in there to show you've got a grasp of traditional grammatical structures. Fiction that breaks those rules, while entertaining, might not emphasize that you KNEW the rules before you started breaking them. I'd say anything you wrote around you senior year whenever the complexity of the arguments were highest etc etc. The Physical Examination might be good in terms of showing off your bilingualism. Do you know if that'd be a plus?
they publish educational guides for schools. kinda like the 'this school is good for this, this school is good for that, this school has X # of students' sorta publication. they focus primarily on getting international students to go to schools in the u.s. their publication guides go to places in asia and europe mostly.
i imagine that bringing the physical form would be good because it shows them i can translate/edit boring medical documents. also the lady on the phone mentioned it was 'rare' to find someone with any sort of international, education, and editing experience 'round here. i don't know if thats true but it sounded like they were happy to have my resume...
You gotta play up the Japanese angle, then. I'd say take whatever you can that shows translation abilities, and whatever you wrote for high-level Japanese classes in college.
